The People You Got High With Aren't Your Friends

The People You Got High With Aren't Your Friends

If the only thing holding your friendship together is a bag, a bottle, or a needle โ€” that's not a friendship. That's a business arrangement. And the business is killing you.

I had a crew. We'd been through everything together โ€” or so I thought. We laughed, we schemed, we watched each other's backs. At least that's what I told myself at 3 a.m. on somebody's stained couch. Here's what I know now: not one of those people ever once said "Tony, you're dying, let me help you stop." Not one. Because if I'd stopped, the party lost a customer.

Real friends don't watch you die. Read that as many times as you need to. A real friend is the one who tells you the truth when it costs them something โ€” who risks the friendship to save the friend. Your using buddies never risked a thing. They needed you sick, because your sickness made their sickness feel normal.

When I got clean, my phone went quiet. Ninety percent of my contacts just... evaporated. At first it felt like loneliness. Then it felt like what it actually was: the sound of a burning building finally going silent after the fire's out. Every one of those numbers was a doorway back to the basement. I deleted them all, and I'd do it again tomorrow.

And the ones who called me boring? The ones who said I'd changed, like it was an insult? They were right โ€” I had changed. I changed into somebody who wanted to live. If your growth threatens someone, they were never growing with you. They were growing around you, like weeds around a fence post.

I'm not telling you this is easy. Losing your whole circle at once is one of the loneliest feelings on earth, and loneliness is a trigger โ€” I know. That's why you don't just cut people off, you replace the circle: meetings, sponsors, people in recovery who actually want to see you win. Get numbers from people whose lives you want, not people whose habits you had.

Here's the test, and it's simple: would they show up at your funeral sober and cry real tears? Or would they just be the reason you're in the casket? The Memory Wall on this site is full of people whose "friends" were the second kind. Don't let your name end up there because you were loyal to people who were loyal to your addiction, not to you.
