Nobody Owes You Their Trust Back
You can get clean and still be untrustworthy. Read that again, because it's the sentence that took me the longest to accept.
I got sober and expected applause. I thought thirty days clean meant everybody should hand me back the keys โ to the house, to the kids, to their hearts. And when they didn't, I got angry. "I'm doing everything right!" I'd say. "When is it enough?" Here's the answer nobody gave me straight: it's enough when they decide it's enough. Not you. Them.
Think about what you actually did. Not the highlight reel โ the real tape. The lying to faces you claimed to love. The money that walked away. The promises made at 2 a.m. and broken by noon. The times they cried and you told them they were overreacting. You didn't break their trust once โ you took a sledgehammer to it, daily, for years. And now you want it back because you stopped swinging the hammer? That's not how this works.
Trust is rebuilt in drops and lost in buckets. One kept promise is a drop. Showing up when you said you'd show up โ a drop. A year of drops fills the bucket back up. But understand: the bucket was yours to break, and it's yours to refill, one drop at a time, with zero guarantee about how long it takes.
And here's the part that stings the most: they don't owe you the chance to refill it. Your wife, your kids, your mother โ they are allowed to protect themselves from you, even the clean version of you, for as long as they need. That's not punishment. That's the consequence of what you did, and consequences don't expire just because you got sober.
So stop demanding trust and start earning it in silence. Do the right thing when nobody's watching โ especially then. Keep your word about small things, because small things are the only evidence that the big things will hold. And if someone never trusts you again? That grief is yours to carry. It's part of the price. Pay it without complaint.
The ones who do come back โ and some will โ won't come back because of your words. They'll come back because they watched you, for months and years, be somebody different. Be that somebody. The drops add up.
