Your Rock Bottom Has a Basement

Everybody talks about rock bottom like it's a floor. Like there's some solid concrete slab down there that catches you when you fall far enough. I'm here to tell you there isn't.

I thought I'd hit rock bottom a dozen times. The first arrest โ€” that was bottom. Then the second one, worse. Then watching my mother's face when she realized the son she raised was gone and something else was wearing his skin. Then the night I sat in a cell and understood, all the way down in my bones, that nobody was coming to get me out this time. Every single time I said "this is the bottom," life showed me a trapdoor.

That's the lie they don't tell you in the pamphlets: rock bottom isn't a place. It's a decision. The digging only stops when you put the shovel down, and nobody can put it down for you.

I know men who died waiting to hit bottom. They kept telling themselves they'd stop when it got bad enough โ€” when they lost the house, the wife, the kids, the job. Then they lost all of it and discovered the basement: the part where you're alive but everything that made life worth living is gone, and the only thing left is the next fix. Some of them never came back up.

Here's the arithmetic nobody wants to do: every day you keep digging, the climb back gets longer. Not metaphorically โ€” literally. More wreckage to clean up, more people to make amends to, more years off your life. The hole doesn't care about your intentions. It only cares about the shovel.

So stop waiting for the floor. There is no floor. There's just you, the shovel, and a choice you get to make right now, today: keep digging, or start climbing. The climb is brutal โ€” I'm not going to lie to you, the first ninety days felt like breathing through a straw. But every rung up is a rung you never have to climb again.

Put the shovel down. Today. Not when it gets worse โ€” because I promise you, it can always get worse. The basement goes all the way down.
